This course offers an introduction to organic chemistry with an emphasis on the applications and major reactions of organic compounds, reaction mechanisms, synthesis, and structure elucidation via spectroscopic techniques. Students are also introduced to green chemistry principles and examples related to the biological behaviour of organic molecules. Chemical reactivity is discussed from a mechanistic perspective and includes an introduction into multi-step synthesis of organic compounds, with a focus on substitutions, eliminations, aromaticity, pi-bonds as electrophiles or nucleophiles, and carbonyl-based nucleophiles. In the laboratory, practical skills are introduced to understand, identify, separate, and prepare organic compounds with a focus on biological or medicinally relevant examples. This course continues from CHM151Y1 and CHM136H1 and is designed for students in life and health science programs. Students enrolled in any Chemistry Specialist or Major program are strongly encouraged to take CHM249H1 . (Lab Materials Fee: approximately $27).

This is a student-contributed aggregate, not an official University of Toronto record. It is also not a measure of how hard the course is — a course average moves with who enrols in it, not only with the material.

Per-term figures stay hidden until each term clears five contributors. 3 observations can support one honest number; they cannot support 3.

What we don’t have yet

Per-term breakdownHeld back deliberately. Splitting 3 observations across terms would be false precision.
Instructor-level detailAverages are not split by instructor. At these sample sizes the difference between sections is noise, not signal.

What this opens up

20 courses list CHM247H1 as a prerequisite

The other 13 have no page yet. Listing a course here means it names CHM247H1 among its prerequisites — often as one of several ways to satisfy the same requirement, so this is what CHM247H1 makes available, not what it alone guarantees.
